Living Authentically : Health, Longevity and Wellness Practices from the Daoist and Chinese Medical Tradition

This series of 9 classes will be an introduction to some of the foundational concepts and practices from these ancient traditions. We will use the channel system and the organs of Chinese medicine as a road map to explore what it means to be human.

Beginning with the Lung and ending with the Liver, the 12 channels and organs are metaphors for the multiple dimensions of human life.

Topics covered will include :

- Qi Gong energy work and breathing exercises
- Diet and food from a Chinese medicine perspective
- Chinese herbs for health and longevity
- Meditation techniques, sleep and dreaming
- Cultivation of mind, body, spirit - mental, somatic and emotional cultivation techniques
- Chinese medical and Daoist classic books - applying wisdom from the classical texts
- Self inquiry
- The 12 Primary Channels and organs of Chinese medicine
- Theory of the 9 heart pains
- Theory of the Five Elements as it relates to personality and how to work with emotions

As we progress through the course we will follow the theme that each channel and organ system presents to us. These themes can be roughly divided into 3 classical Chinese concepts:

Yang Sheng / Nourishing Life – physical health and wellbeing
Yang Xin / Nourishing the Heart, mind and emotions
Yang Xing / Nourishing our true nature

This class is intended for beginners. You do not need any knowledge of Chinese medicine to participate. All that is required is a willingness to practice, to examine yourself and to listen to yourself. None of these practices are prescriptive. The purpose is not to give instructions about what is best for you and your life. Rather, as a participant in this class you will experiment with these theories and practices and evaluate them based upon whether they are meaningful for you.
